What is Museum Studies?
Have you ever wondered how museums decide what things to collect, or what makes something a museum, or even why we have museums in the first place? Museum Studies helps answer these questions and more. It also helps prepare students for a career in museums (and there are many of these).
Museums in the 21st century have taken on new and exciting roles within their communities. They are reaching a broader and more diverse audience using innovative tools and programs. Museums come in a wide variety of types and sizes, from smaller local institutions focused on engaging audiences in their region, to national giants such as the Smithsonian () and those with an international scope, such as the Metropolitan Museum () or the Louvre (). Museum Studies engages with issues that affect all types of museums, and the classes explore examples from museums all over the world.
