UTEP can build meaningful careers in their own community, without having to leave the city.
UMC's partnership with UTEP's Health programs provides students with access to high-demand
programs, as well as hands-on clinical training at the region's only Level 1 trauma center. This has created
a pathway for students to obtain careers locally after graduation. As healthcare continues to evolve and
as our community grows, the need for highly trained and compassionate healthcare professionals is
tremendous. Fifty-five percent of UMC's Associates with nursing degrees and 47% of our Associates with
health sciences degrees are UTEP grads. A partnership between UMC and UTEP is important for our
community, given it adds more qualified healthcare professionals and stronger healthcare services to
the region.
Recognition through the Partner in Prosperity Award reflects a longstanding, mission-driven partnership
that has been focused on advancing education and healthcare for our region. It highlights the impact that
is made when two organizations work together to build a sustainable healthcare workforce. At UMC, we

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) has been proud to serve as a support partner
and advisor to UTEP throughout the relaunch of the mining engineering program. Our leadership has
engaged directly and in-depth with UTEP's faculty and engineering departments to help inform curriculum
development and connect the program with potential industry partners and SME members. For SME,
supporting the relaunch of this program also represents the restoring of a legacy institution to its rightful
place at the center of mining education in America. Advancing the mining workforce should be a critical
priority for institutions around the world today.
This partnership and the relaunch of the mining engineering program could not come at a more
important time. Last year, U.S. universities graduated only 312 mining engineers while an estimated 500
job openings nationwide are projected to sit unfilled annually over the next decade. UTEP's program is
projected to produce up to 100 mining engineers each year once fully established, representing a major
portion of the national demand from a single, much-needed program.
Receiving the Presidential Gold Bar Award is a tremendous honor, and it means all the more given the
context in which it's being presented. What makes the UTEP partnership so special is the convergence
of so many things SME cares about: honoring the history of mining education in this country, expanding
access to the profession, and responding urgently to a real workforce crisis facing our industry."
