Building Excellence at Home: José Gael Muñoz Named Top Ten Senior

What’s Happening:
José Gael Muñoz, a first-generation student at the Woody L. Hunt College of Business, has been named one of the 2026 Top Ten Seniors, one of The JAVÃûÅ®ÓÅ¹Ý of Texas at El Paso’s highest honors recognizing academic excellence, leadership, and service. His journey reflects a powerful message: world-class success can be built right here at home.
Who He Is:
For José Gael Muñoz, success was never about leaving; it was about proving what’s possible by staying.
Despite being accepted into several prestigious universities, including Ivy League institutions, Muñoz chose the Woody L. Hunt College of Business to remain close to his family and invest in his community. Guided by a strong support system and the entrepreneurial culture of Hunt Business, he set out to build a legacy rooted in both excellence and impact.
“I wanted to build my legacy right here in El Paso and prove that you don’t have to leave your roots to reach the top.”
At Hunt Business, Muñoz immersed himself in opportunities that challenged and elevated him. He became an active member of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) and the Financial Management Association (FMA) while serving as the Finance and Investments Club's Secretary. There, he went beyond participation, taking the initiative to teach peers technical skills and industry insights not typically found in the classroom.
His commitment to mentorship became a defining part of his journey. As a Teaching Assistant, Peer Mentor for the QMB course, and mentor in the Miner Mentorship Program, Muñoz worked closely with students at the beginning of their academic paths. In those moments, he saw reflections of his own early ambition and made it his mission to help others recognize their potential.
One of the most transformative influences in his journey was his mentorship with Professor Robert Wilson, whose guidance challenged him academically and opened doors to opportunities that shaped his career trajectory. That relationship, Muñoz says, embodies what makes the Hunt College experience unique.
Being named a Top Ten Senior is more than an individual achievement; it is a milestone that represents perseverance, sacrifice, and purpose. As a double major in Financial Analytics and Accounting, Muñoz balanced rigorous academics with professional pursuits, all while striving for excellence at every step.
“Miners don’t just belong in elite rooms; they are built to lead them.”
After graduation, Muñoz will begin his career in consulting with Deloitte in New York City, having earned offers from top global firms including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan. As he steps into the next chapter, he carries a clear mission: to open doors for others and redefine what is possible for students from his community.
The Impact:
José Gael Muñoz represents the very best of the Woody L. Hunt College of Business, driven, community-minded, and relentlessly committed to excellence. His story is a testament to the power of staying rooted, thinking boldly, and leading with purpose.
